COMMUNITY REPUTATION!
Depending on their perspective people refer to this dump in conversation as the "Sienna Dump" or the "Iowa Colony Landfill". Newspapers are doing the same in their headlines.

We do not want our community to be branded in this way. The 150-foot proposed height would make it a landmark seen for miles.  CAD has a vision of positive growth along the 288 corridor.  We want our community to be a part of that growth, and that will not happen while an inexperienced landfill owner with a history of TCEQ violations in Fort Bend County is busy covering 258 acres with debris standing 150 feet high in our midst.  We refuse to surrender our environment, master-planned communities, subdivisions, homes and investment properties to a landfill.

During the forty-four years that the applicants say it will take to build this Mount Trashmore, we do not want our friends to ask, "Where do you live in relation to that dump?". When the Grand Parkway is complete, can you imagine being asked, "Do we exit before or after the dump?"

We have a vision for our community that includes residential neighborhoods, grocery stores, churches, schools and parks.

We will not accept this landfill in our community!

44 YEARS OF NOISE, ODOR AND TRASH!

THE TRUCK TRAFFIC - Their application states that we can expect a truck to pass by the entrance to our homes 480 times a day (240 trucks making round trips).
That means that on a two-lane highway we will be competing with almost 50 trucks an hour on the six miles of road from Arcola to the proposed site, and so will our children's school buses.

SAFETY - We asked the applicant if he had provided turn lanes so that trucks could safely enter and exit the site. "We are not required to do that" was his response. So these trucks will be coming almost to a stop in order to turn off of a highway where the speed limit is 70 miles per hour.

The Horrifying(!) Story of the Greenhouse Landfill

The Greenhouse Road Type IV Landfill is operated by G. O. Weiss, Inc. in Katy. According to T.N.R.C.C., G.O. Wyss , Inc., purchased this property in 1984 and acquired permits to excavate and landfill. Soon after a developer began selling lots on the adjacent property. Of course, he sold those lots closest to the permitted landfill site FIRST to unsuspecting buyers.

G.O. Wyss began operation a few years ago, after the subdivision was already in place. Selling dirt and taking in trash.

During a recent public meeting in a Katy school auditorium the residents were in near riot. Representative John Culberson spoke on their behalf.

They say that their foundations have cracked and their homes flood during heavy rains; a layer of dust covers the entire area; the noise is intrusive even inside their homes; and the rat infestation is evident for up to two miles. One ex-Marine Colonel says the only way to enjoy sitting in his hot tub is to take his pistol with him and shoot the rats as they cross his yard.

The residents have filed a lawsuit against the developer. They protest to no avail to TNRCC, whose position is that none of these problems are the responsibility of the landfill. They maintain that the landfill is being operated properly.

WHAT ABOUT OUR INVESTMENT?

We know what a trash dump covering 258 acres standing 150 feet will mean to those of us who live within three or four miles. The diminution of the value of our homes and investment properties will be substantial. CAD is aware of one dilligent group preparing documentation for a lawsuit in the event that this permit is actually granted.

If you think that what happened in Katy, Texas surely couldn't happen here then take a drive by the Type IV landfill located between Highway 521 and Highway 288 off of Almeda Genoa.
(See Photo Page for directions)

Two differences:

The Almeda landfill is hidden. Not visible from either highway. This proposed landfill would be in plain view from both Hwy. 521 and the Grand Parkway and for miles around.

The Almeda landfill is a hole in the ground being filled with trash. This proposed landfill would be built as a 150 foot mountain of trash.
